Should Students Wear Uniforms In The Classroom?

I am a high school teacher in NYC. I have noticed that some elementary schools in the NYC area have implemented uniforms for their students. I love this idea, and think it can go a long way in improving the quality of a school. While I have seen uniforms in elementary schools, I haven't seen it in high schools. I think uniforms can probably be the most useful in the high school setting. Clothes cause a lot of problems in schools. Hats are a constant problem in the classrooms. Student competition is enhanced due to clothing and often used to designate membership in gangs.

I found the following article while doing some research on the topic, and learned some interesting information!

Here is a short blurb in support of my stance, check out the site above for more from this article:

"Public school uniforms became popular 1994, when the Long Beach, California school district became the first to require uniforms. A year later, according to the district, school fights and muggings there went down 50%; sexual offenses declined 74%."

I'd love to hear some comments on the following talking points:

Is anyone aware of high schools that have implemented uniforms in the New York City area?

Has anyone experienced uniforms in high schools? What was your experience?
